Spring, 1962. The last spring of the Algerian War. The spring before the summer of Independence. Ali, 11, sells newspapers. His world is that of war and childhood. His father is a moujahid, who, Ali is told, has gone to work in France. There is the cinema, where Ali goes to find peace, reciting by heart the dialogue of Los Olvidados. There are friends, French and Algerian. There is Zina, the whore whom Ali is in love with. There is Rachel, the Jewish neighbour who (Independence or not!) would rather stay and "die at the hand of Arabs than be humiliated down there in France". Then there is Nico, Ali's best friend. The two boys see their world changing, and make believe that Nico will never leave. Never?
